Warehouse floors sometimes suffer from
a “rocking slab” syndrome. When a heavy load is on one side
of a joint it depresses one side of the joint below the elevation of
the other side. This would be typically caused when a forklift
truck is crossing a joint in the floor. It will then “hit” the
other side of the joint resulting in an impact that can cause damage
to the wheels, the payload, the concrete at the joint, and even cause
a safety hazard to the driver. This problem can be resolved in a
number of ways. The best and most long lasting solutions are the
insertion of retrofit dowels, or the installation of “Joint
Savers”. These are both long term solutions to the problem, which hold the sides of the joint at the same elevation and thereby
resolve the problems of impacts at the joint edges.
